Thank you for your reflections!
Here are some ideas about how you might contribute to the design of your neighbourhood:
-
As a regular citizen in the neighbourhood: There are many ways to get involved in shaping the built environment of your neighbourhood. This might include participating in a city design or public engagement process, applying for a small grant to build a little free library or other placemaking activity, organizing a community mural, planting a garden outside of your home, joining a community garden, and more.
-
As an advocate or community organization: By familiarizing yourself with the principles of and strategies for age- and dementia-inclusive design, you can help implement projects in your community that support older adults and people living with dementia and advocate to your local government for design changes to the neighbourhood.
-
As an urban planner or designer: Whether you work on housing, arts and culture, social inclusion, transportation, public spaces, or otherwise, you can incorporate age- and dementia-inclusive design principles and strategies into work. This might include adding age- and dementia-inclusive design as a guiding lens in a new policy, conducting a review of proposed designs from these perspective, and engaging people with lived experience when designing or upgrading streets, buildings, and public spaces.
