Understanding dementia-inclusive communities

Broadly, all actions and strategies in this training support age- and dementia-inclusive neighbourhoods. However, some actions and strategies are specific to the needs of people living with dementia.

A dementia-inclusive community is one where people living with dementia feel fully included in society, both in social settings and in the built environment. Similarly to age-friendly neighbourhood planning, there are four main components to creating dementia-inclusive community:

  1. Education and awareness

  2. Built environment

  3. Programs and services

  4. Support for people living with dementia and their care partners

Terminology
You may have heard both “dementia-friendly” and “dementia-inclusive” to describe neighbourhood or community initiatives for people living with dementia.

These modules use the term “dementia-inclusive” to convey the importance of full societal inclusion and access for people living with dementia and their care partners.
